Abstract
Reinforced concrete (RC) structures deteriorate over time, with reinforcement corrosion being a primary factor. Currently, a large number of our real estate assets has aged, and as our country experiences significant seismic activity, it is crucial to predict their life service and potential damage under seismic threats. This aligns with the trend of new seismic codes emphasizing predictive capabilities during the design phase. To address this, the research objective of this thesis is to develop a framework for applying corrosion-dependent parameters relative to geometry, material properties, and degradation hysteresis parameters to RC element sections. Additionally, it aims to investigate the seismic performance of a typical full-scale bridge with corroded piers as an application of this framework. Reinforcement corrosion is considered an aging factor due to its significant impact on RC degradation. As seismic actions are of primary interest, a nonlinear hysteresis model is necessary. After reviewing some available literature, the modified hysteresis model proposed by Ibara Medina Krawinkler was chosen for its comprehensive degradation parameters containing also a cyclic degradations parameter. For numerical investigation, the OpenSees finite element software, designed for such research, was selected. The RC structure is modelled using elastic beam elements and zero-length plastic hinges in predefined zones derived from global collapse analysis. The chosen hysteresis model (MODIMK) is assigned to these hinges, with equations developed for five hysteresis degradation parameters for a calibration purpose. The model appropriateness of the model performance is checked through an application using experimental data taken from the literature. To incorporate reinforcement corrosion effects, equations correlating a given characteristic corrosion level (CL) with degradation model parameters were developed. A hybrid approach (Implicit/Explicit) was adopted to calibrate the model using experimental test results. Corrosion degradation effect on dimensional and material characteristics were explicitly considered. The hysteresis cyclic degradation parameters, however, were calibrated using the Random-Mutation Hill-Climbing algorithm. Implicit consideration was given to other unforeseen effects, such as transverse reinforcement corrosion and steelconcrete bond, through calibration of cyclic degradation parameters using the same experimental results. As an application, a nonlinear dynamic analysis of a full-scale RC Road Bridge with corroded piers was performed assuming a high seismic zone. Results indicated a decrease in structural capacity with increasing corrosion levels, with corroded piers dissipating less energy. Additionally, corrosion effects were found to be highly dependent on the type and the intensity of the earthquake acceleration time histories.
